Pongal/Sankranthi were traditional festival in olden days you can say something like festival of harvest, during this time all the farmers get their stock from their farm/fields so its like a time to celebrate and prayers are offered to their ancestors, workers who worked in the farming fields are given food stocks from the yield they get.
